Clara Sophia Raile Walter
Clara Sophia Walter was born February 2, 1907 on the farm of her parents, Gottlieb and Regina Raile, northwest of St. Francis, Kansas. She was the oldest of ten children. She attended District 56 rural school. She was baptized in infancy and was confirmed at the age of 18 at the Zion Evangelical Church northwest of St. Francis. She was active in the Women's Society of the E.U.B. Church and was later a member of the Methodist Church.
Sophia worked for "Ma" Pearl Quigley's cafe as a young woman. On November 12, 1925, she was united in marriage to Rudolph (Roy) Walter. They made their home on the Walter farm until December 1952. At that time they moved to St. Francis and made their home at 315 First Street until Roy's death, April 1961.
The couple had two children, Marjorie and Glenn. Sophia was a homemaker who loved to cook and gather recipes. She was a lover of the garden. After failing health, Sophia took residency at the Good Samaritan Village in St. Francis, Kansas. She died June 25, 1983
