Obituary of Raymond Raile
Raymond William Raile was born February 9, 1923 in the home of his parents, Gottlieb and Regina (nee Holzwarth) Raile Northwest Cheyenne County, Kansas. Being born the ninth of ten children, he enjoyed the distinction of being the baby brother with eight sisters and one older brother. He was baptized August 26, 1923 by Pastor J.J. Meyer of the Zion Evangelical Church and attended Blue Ridge country school.
He graduated from Saint Francis Community High School where he enjoyed playing basketball. Many of his high school classmates became life long friends. Raymond worked after school and summers at Safeway and continued working there after graduation for a few years.
On October 27, 1946, he married Fleda Holl at St. John Lutheran Church in Bird City, Kansas. After marriage, the couple made their home on the farm his parents homesteaded in 1902.
In 1964, the family built a home in St. Francis. Raymond was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church later called Peace Lutheran. He served many years as Chair and member of the church council. Raymond was also an active member of the community and served two terms on the St. Francis City Council.
Raymond was proud of his family, his home and his heritage. He missed very few dance recitals or athletic games of his children and continued the tradition with his grandchildren. Christmas was a favorite of his with his entire family surrounding him making lots of noise and arguing who would get to open the next present.
Farming was in his blood and also his life and joy. Dating back to 1550, Raymond could trace his roots from Germany, to Ukraine to the United States - nearly five centuries of ancestry that tilled the soil. Farming was his profession, his avocation and his recreation.
Raymond loved traveling with his wife throughout the United States. They also made several trips abroad including Europe and Ukraine and were able to visit the birthplace of his father in Neudorf, Moldova. As much as Raymond liked to travel, he was always anxious to return home to be close to his family and the farm.
Only until the last seven weeks of Raymond's life, did his health suffer significantly. During his hospitalizations in Denver, all he wanted to do was go home. On November 4, 2000 at University Hospital, Denver, Colorado he surrendered his life on earth with his family by his side. He finally got to go home.
Raymond is survived by his wife, Fleda; his children Penny Raile of West Hollywood, California, Tim Raile and his wife Robyn of St. Francis; his grandchildren, Jessica and Michael Raile; his sisters, Dorine Zimbleman and husband Raymond, and Lucile Neitzel, brother in-law, Fred G. Krien of St. Francis and Elise Schlittenhardt of Trent, Oregon; and many nephews, nieces and friends.
